TREES Oil Painting Workshop

The tree offers a great variety for landscape painters: abstract, plein air, studio, and representational. We will explore trees for their utilitarian uses in the structure and value drama needed to make a great landscape.

This unique and versatile element can act alone, in groups, or in mass as a diminishing guide, backdrop, or focus element. Trees may also provide the vehicle needed to bring vibrant color and strong value contrast to your painting. Individually, they can provide the detail needed to support a great deal of abstraction or be used as a signature piece to provide context and elegance to a painting.

Workshop Focus:

  • Understanding trees as structural elements in landscape composition

  • Using trees to create depth and perspective through scale and placement

  • Exploring value drama and contrast with tree forms

  • Mastering trees as focal points, backdrops, or supporting elements

  • Incorporating vibrant color and strong values through foliage and form

  • Balancing detail and abstraction in tree rendering

Artistic Approaches:

Whether you work in abstract, plein air, studio, or representational styles, you'll discover how to leverage the versatility of trees to enhance your landscape paintings. From solitary specimens to forest masses, you'll learn to paint trees that add drama, structure, and visual interest to your compositions.
