Oil Painting on Panel: A Fast-Paced Workshop for Expressive Application
Join us for a focused oil painting workshop designed for painters ready to explore the unique challenges and rewards of working on cradled wooden panels. This is not a beginner course, but it’s perfect for those with some painting experience looking to break away from reliance on drawing and instead deepen their understanding of application and surface interaction.
Unlike oil on paper, panel painting offers no forgiving edge — the rigidity of the surface calls for a different relationship with your tools and marks. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to adapt your techniques to suit the solid feel of shellacked wood, embracing the immediacy of oil while pushing your mark-making for stronger, more intentional results.
Each participant will receive three to four 5x7 and one 11x14 pre-shellacked panels. The structure encourages decisive work — ideal for building a body of paintings efficiently, whether for personal growth or preparing for the holiday season.
This is a fast-moving, hands-on class for painters looking to loosen up, get bold, and produce multiple pieces in a short time. Let the surface guide you, and leave with a fresh approach to oil painting.
We supply all materials for this workshop so you do not have to bring a thing to the workshop. This includes surface materials, paint, brushes and medium.
You can bring your own brushes and knives or you can use my materials and bring nothing but your talent and joy.
