Artists to Know: Sam Peters

Sam Peters is, not only an exciting new artist to learn about, but also an old friend of our own Andy Braitman. I’m really drawn to his process; he works with paint in a very organic fashion, then digitizes the painted surface, and lastly, uses the digital image as his source for new paintings.

Peters spent most of his adult life in Maryland before moving to New Mexico. He fell in love with printmaking and endeavored to learn everything possible about it. This was accompanied by a strong desire to teach art, which required the acquisition of an MFA in printmaking, which he earned from the University of Maryland, College Park. Peters taught printmaking at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore for thirteen years before retiring from teaching. Over the years he acquired additional interests in painting, photography, mixed-media collage and computer graphics. These varied skills have coalesced into his latest series of works, three-dimensional collage sculptures.

In addition to his teaching at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Peters has presented workshops on monotypes, collage, artist books, as well as computer-assisted printmaking and computer-assisted photography, nationally and internationally. His artwork is included in the collections of The Baltimore Museum of Art, El Paso Museum of Art, Capital Broadcasting Company, Museu da Gravura Citade de Curitiba (Curitiba, Brazil), Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), as well as universities, museums, and arts organizations throughout the United States.

Artists to Know: Kate Vasseur

Kate Vasseur is a small business owner and local artists who graduated from Elon University with a BFA in Art. She is currently the owner and permanent artists at Studio K here in Charlotte, NC. Studio K is a working studio and gallery in the heart of Elizabeth. It is a place to find and be surrounded by “All Things Creative.” She is most interested in “exploring the world with creative eyes and appreciation. Curating life’s surroundings and the daily finds from operating a working studio and gallery.” …Couldn’t have said it any better, Kate.

Kate’s work is like a poem full of esoteric allusions. It’s almost like she’s sharing a secret with her audience, but only as a whisper. Her striking imagery and playful handling of materials help to create an environment that all audiences can enjoy. Each piece of Kate’s pays extreme attention to detail (possibly due to her design background), everything is deliberate and nothing is left neglected. If Kate is up for sharing visual secrets, I can’t wait to hear more…

Artists to Know: Joseph Zbukvic

Joseph’s early education was very versatile and included both the performing and visual arts. Despite his obvious talent, his parents decided that there was no future in painting as a profession, and in 1967 enrolled him into a university to study languages and literature in order to pursue a teaching career.
This was interrupted in 1970, when, due to political unrest, they decided to immigrate from Yugoslavia to Australia. There he continued his formal education at Deakin University in Melbourne. He graduated in 1974, gaining a Diploma of Art in Industrial Design. During this course he discovered watercolor as a medium and began to paint again, achieving instant success at art competitions, winning his first major art award in 1975.
He had his first solo exhibition in 1977 at Eastgate Gallery, Brighton, Melbourne.
In 1978 he began painting full time and quickly established himself as a leading watercolorist. He has achieved enormous success with his sensitively rendered watercolors covering an incredible variety of subjects.
After a 20-year absence, he visited Zagreb in 1990. He received a warm welcome and was made artist in residence at the Mimara Museum of Fine Art.
Joseph has continued to explore new subjects and fresh ways to express his vision by frequent overseas travel. He has reached a new level of technical ability, maturity and strength as he enters the fourth decade of his career.

Weekly Lecture: 3 Types of Landscapes

To be successful you need the illusion of depth:

DENSITY- concentration of materials (mediums, paint, wax, etc)

&

BALANCE- concentration of space (distance)

There are 3 types of Landscapes…

-Portrait- Try using a BLOB with this technique. Choose a close-up view with the subject in the foreground

-TableTop- Linear composition with a solid background (the further from the wall the subject is, the more difficult the piece)

-Vista- Neverending view into the distance (For example, looking from a mountain top)

Artists to Know: Enrique Gomez

“The impossibility of my sculpture brings me both joy and sadness at the same time. The joy comes from seeing and experiencing the Fantasy of the work but that is coupled with the sadness of the fact that we are destroying all of these beautiful things.”
